The benefits of Bereavement Support Groups

Discover the emotional and physical benefits of joining a bereavement support group and find a free, friendly group near you.

Finding comfort in community

Grief is a deeply personal journey, but it doesn’t have to be one you walk alone. For many, the idea of joining a bereavement support group can feel daunting at first. Yet, connecting with others who understand the pain of loss can be one of the most healing steps you take.

At St Michael’s Hospice, we offer free, friendly monthly bereavement groups in several locations to provide a safe space for those coping with loss. These groups are designed to help you navigate your grief and find connection, understanding, and support. They are open to anyone to attend, you do not need to have been involved with us here at St Michael’s.

Emotional benefits of joining a Support Group

  1. Understanding and empathy
Meeting others who have experienced a similar loss can help you feel less alone. Often, friends and family may not fully grasp what you’re going through, but in a group setting, there’s an unspoken understanding that can be incredibly validating.
  2. A safe space to share
Grief can be isolating, especially when you feel unable to share your feelings with those around you. Support groups offer a safe, confidential space to express your emotions without judgment.
  3. Hope through shared stories
Hearing others share their experiences can remind you that healing is possible. Each person’s journey is different, but the collective strength within the group can offer hope and encouragement for your own path.

Physical and practical benefits

  1. Reduced stress and anxiety
Grief often manifests physically, leading to feelings of stress and tension. Engaging with a group can provide emotional relief, which in turn helps reduce physical symptoms like headaches, fatigue, or restlessness.
  2. Improved sleep and energy
Knowing you have a supportive community can help ease feelings of loneliness and anxiety, making it easier to rest and recharge.
  3. Access to resources and advice
Bereavement groups are often a great place to learn about additional resources, coping techniques, or strategies for managing daily life while grieving.
