We provide a variety of placements, in every department of the Hospice, for health and social professionals, both pre and post qualification. However, placements are limited in order to protect patients and families from constant changes to staff. For availability and further information please contact the Education Team.

Types of placement include:

Junior Doctors come to St Michael’s Hospice for four month placements. This provides a chance for these newly qualified doctors, who have not yet specialised, to gain palliative care experience, improve their skills in the practice and gain an understanding of how the Hospice operates.

Specialist Registrars: Additionally, we provide one year placements for Specialist Registrars as part of their training to become consultants in palliative medicine.

Student Nurses: Most Herefordshire student nurses will receive at least one day of experience at St Michael’s Hospice, to give them a general overview of what services we offer and how we operate. Furthermore, around 2-3 student nurses per year are offered longer “elective” placements of between 6-8 weeks at the end of their third degree course.

Qualified Nurses: A further 15-20 “post-qualified” nurses per year undertaking education courses in palliative care are given training on site for between one day and
a week each.
