Surprise 80th birthday party thrown for Hospice supporter

A surprise 80th birthday party organised by a family with an integral link to St Michael’s has raised £300 for us.

The family of Vonnie Clay arranged a surprise party for family and close friends to mark her milestone birthday, with guests invited to donate to St Michael’s in lieu of gifts.

The family has a close connection to St Michael’s, dating from before the Hospice had even been built. Back in the early 1980s, Vonnie’s husband, John, supported a fundraiser who was walking Offa’s Dyke to collect money for the Freda Pearce Foundation – the fundraising group which helped secure funding allowing St Michael’s to be built.

John also regularly took part in the St Michael’s Hospice Half Marathon – RUN Hereford.

Sadly, he died in 2010. His daughter, Paula, said: “We will be forever grateful for the care he received and support we as a family received.”

As a family, they have continued supporting St Michael’s, taking part in various events over the years, together and with friend, including RUN Hereford, the Venus walk, a skydive, and more recently Phoebe (Vonnie’s granddaughter) ran the Cardiff Half Marathon, when they organised a Big Tea to boost the fundraising.
