St Michael's Hospice announces new look for two shops
Two of our shops are undergoing a transformation!
We are thrilled to announce that two of our shops will soon be receiving a fresh new look! This exciting refurbishment is part of our ongoing commitment to offering even greater value to our supporters and the local community.
Hereford’s Folly Lane shop, and the Gloucester Road site in Ross-on-Wye, will become popular St Michael’s Pound Shops later this month.
We’re excited to share that this change has been inspired by the success of our existing pound shops in Eign Gate, Hereford, and Victoria Street, Leominster, as well as our commitment to keeping quality items out of landfill.
With the cost of living continuing to rise, we’re confident that expanding this model will help us support even more people in our community by providing quality, affordable items.
Lesley Wilkinson, Head of Retail at St Michael’s Hospice, said, “We have enjoyed great success with the pound shop model in both Hereford and Leominster, and look forward to bringing these two shops under the same strategy.
“This change also provides a solution to a challenge many charity retailers are facing as a result of the collapse of the re-cycled textile market. St Michael’s Hospice are committed to keeping as much textile and other donated items out of landfill as possible, and by expanding our Pound Shop offering, we can provide value to our customers and keep great items in circulation.”
To help make the transition as seamless as possible, we will temporarily be closing these two shops while work is undertaken. The Folly Lane shop will be closed all day on Tuesday 19th November (edited- due to weather delays, this shop will now reopen on Friday 22nd November) and the Gloucester Road shop will be closed all day on Monday 25th November and Tuesday 26th November (edited 26/11 – due to circumstances outside of our control, this shop will now be closed Monday 25th – Thursday 28th November, reopening on Friday 29th November).
Frequently Asked Quetsions:
We know that cost is an important factor for our shoppers and by making this change, we are not only able to provide better discount shopping opportunities across a wider area, but this will help us continue to give pre-loved items a second chance.
In addition, significant changes to fabric recycling in recent months, we have been investigating ways to ensure items that might not sell in one location are not relegated to landfill. By redirecting donations to our pound shops to sell at a reduced rate, we’re not only giving donations a better shot at a second chance.
Our Pound Shops play an important role within our retail portfolio, providing opportunity for clothing, homeware and other donated items from other shops to be given a second chance.
These two shops will offer a similar variety of items to our existing Pound Shops, with women’s and men’s clothing, children’s clothing and toys, homeware and accessories.
Yes, you are still welcome to donate your good quality pre-loved items at these shops.
Like all our shops, items donated may not always stay at that location. Once items are carefully checked, sorted and assessed for quality, if they are suitable for that shop, they will be priced and put out onto the shop floor. If we feel they would sell better at another location, they are sent to our central donation distribution centre in Whitestone. Here, each item is again checked, sorted, and then sent on its way to its new home in the most appropriate shop.
