Out of this world – Venus raises over £30K

Hundreds of women ensured an annual night walk remains one of Hereford’s hottest fundraisers.

Around 600 supporters helped raise in excess of £30,000 for St Michael’s Hospice during the Venus midnight walk on Friday.

Walkers chose either a 5K, 10K or 15K route taking them through the streets of Hereford city centre, before heading back to Hereford Leisure Centre on Holmer Road, with the final walkers returning around 2am.

Those taking part travelled from across Herefordshire and beyond, although there wouldn’t have been many who came further than Katherine Williams and her daughter, Ella, who flew over from their home in Spain to be part of Venus.

“It was an amazing event,” said Katherine, who has supported St Michael’s since witnessing the care given to her mother who died at the Hospice in 2015.

“We loved being part of this powerful, pink and positive posse of wonder women. The event was brilliantly organised and the support staff were so smiley and supportive.

“It was well worth flying back from Spain for, and we will back next year for sure.”

The fundraiser couldn’t have taken place without the support of event sponsors medi UK, and the help of dozens of volunteers who gave up their Friday night to ensure the walkers enjoyed a safe and fun walking environment.

Along the route, members of the public cheered walkers on. Refreshments were available, including a stop outside the Hospice’s Home and Living Store on Whitecross Road where the illuminated ‘Love’ lights were on show.

“Thank you to everyone for entering into the spirit of the event and helping make Venus such a memorable event,” said Matt Ashcroft, the Hospice’s Events and Community Fundraising Manager.

“Thanks also to the people of Hereford for the continued support they give to the women along the route.”

The Hospice’s Events programme continues with a series of Open Gardens, culminating in the unveiling of the Hospice gardens in Bartestree on Sunday 11th September when gardening royalty Monty Don will be guest of honour.
