Maurice and Margaret scoop Summer Draw jackpot as almost £30K is raised
Our Summer Draw winners needed some convincing they had won first prize – but can now look forward to a belated anniversary break.
Maurice and Margaret Bennett, from Moreton-on-Lugg, began their summer by winning £2,022.
The couple say they will put some of their winnings towards a belated break, having shelved plans to celebrate their Diamond anniversary in 2020 when the Covid lockdown meant they couldn’t get away.
Once news of the jackpot had sunk in, they were both delighted.
“It was such a wonderful surprise,” said Margaret, who has supported St Michael’s for many years.
“We weren’t sure whether to believe it at first.
“We’ve played the seasonal Draws for years, right back to the time when there was just one per year. It means a lot to support St Michael’s in this way, but we never once thought we would win the top prize.”
Both Margaret and Maurice had a parent who died at St Michael’s.
A friend of theirs also died there in 2016, just after the opening of the new Inpatient Unit. On all occasions, they say the care they witnessed was exceptional.
Their winnings mean they can fulfil a plan which had to be put on the back burner for two years.
“Back in 2020, it was our 60th wedding anniversary,” said Margaret.
“We like to go away in our caravan, but because it was a special anniversary we thought about booking a hotel. Sadly, because of Covid, we never got around to it.
“Hopefully, thanks to the money from the Summer Draw, we can get away this time.”
The 2022 St Michael’s Hospice Summer Draw was a roaring success, raising almost £30,000 for St Michael’s, with generous supporters adding more than £7,000 to this total in donations.
Alongside the jackpot, there was a £250 and £100 prize.
