Health and Social Care Awards

Our very own Dr Cath Blinman, and St Michael’s Hospice as a whole, are among the shortlists for the Palliative Care category of this year’s Hereford Times Health and Social Care Awards.

The Hospice nomination comes from a family member whose husband died at St Michael’s. She recounts Valentine’s Day when the couple enjoyed a glass of champagne while he enjoyed a bath at St Michael’s.

‘It was an act of love and kindness that made me cry with happiness.’

Dr Cath Blinman was nominated by her colleagues who describe her as ‘incredibly committed to the care of people’.

Last year’s Palliative Care Award winner, our very own Medical Director, Dr Tony Blower, has spoken to the Hereford Times ahead of this year’s online ceremony on 22nd October, about the way St Michael’s has adapted during Covid.
‘It has been emotionally extremely hard for patients, families and those caring for them,’ he said.

‘Emotionally it was also very hard for staff who understood the crucial need for people to be together. Thankfully, because of the hospice’s building and our robust infection prevention processes, we were able to offer much less restriction to visiting than most hospices.

‘The staff and volunteers have been incredible and highly professional. We have all looked out for each other.’
