Reindeer Run a runaway success

Children across Herefordshire and its borders have shared some pre-Christmas cheer by helping raise tens of thousands of pounds for St Michael’s Hospice.

Over 4,500 youngsters from 26 primary schools and nurseries took part in the Hospice’s first ever Reindeer Run.

Sponsorship is still being sent in, but it looks likely the event will raise around £35,000.

‘We were confident the Reindeer Run would be a success, but we’ve been blown away by the level of support shown by our community,’ said event organiser, Gaynor Warren.

‘Thank you to every parent, grandparent, relative, friend and neighbour who has donated and, of course, to every child who has donned a pair of antlers and a reindeer nose and enjoyed a socially-distanced walk, jog or run with their friends.’ 

Primary schools and nurseries were supplied with the noses and antlers, and invited to choose the date, distance and location of their Reindeer Run.

For some it was a meander across the playground, while others opted for a run around the school field. Whichever route was chosen, the children were encouraged to get sponsored for St Michael’s.

‘We’re acutely aware that finances can be stretched, particularly at this time of year, so we’re truly grateful for everyone’s generosity,’ Gaynor added.

‘We’re also thankful to the schools and nurseries who, because of COVID guidelines, have had an enormous amount to consider when it comes to putting on events such as this. Their enthusiasm has certainly been rewarded. 

‘The funds raised will help ensure St Michael’s can continue providing care to those who need it in our community this festive time and beyond.’
