St Michael's grateful for further government funding boost
But Chief Executive Matt Fellows says we are still reliant on the generosity of those in our community
St Michael’s Hospice has welcomed a further government funding boost.
The £170,000 cash injection will be spent on projects with a focus on improving the care experience for patients of the Bartestree-based charity.
The funding follows a similar amount handed out to St Michael’s 12 months ago.
“We are very grateful to the Government for this additional funding,” said Matt Fellows, the Hospice’s Chief Executive.
“It comes at a time when we are more reliant than ever on the support of our incredible community, with less than a third of our funding coming from statutory sources and around £600,000 in costs being incurred by the well documented National Insurance and cost of living increases.
“This means over £10 million each year must be raised by our community to keep our hospice care running.
“So as grateful as we are to receive this cash injection from the Government, we depend on our truly incredible supporters to raise the vast majority of our required funding.”
Over the past two financial years, UK hospices have received a total of £125 million – the largest investment in a generation – following lobbying from Hospice UK.
Its aim is to help hospices modernise facilities and infrastructure, so future income received through community support can go directly towards funding patient care.
“Hospice care plays a vital role in our community, and we remain committed to working with our partners and supporters to secure sustainable, long-term funding solutions. Every pound invested in hospice care makes a real difference to the families who rely on our support,” added Mr Fellows.
The government have given specific criteria on how hospices can utilise this funding. This includes the purchase of essential medical equipment, undertaking building refurbishments, upgrading family spaces, and implementing energy efficiency measures. Additionally, digital improvements will allow for better data sharing and expanded outreach services, ensuring that those who wish to receive palliative care in their own homes have access to the support they need.
“At St Michael’s Hospice, we are dedicated to providing exceptional, person-centred care for patients and their families. The news of this funding will allow us to enhance our services and facilities, ensuring that everyone who turns to us for support receives the best possible care in their most challenging moments.”
