Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Standards

Our position

At St Michael’s, we are committed to making a positive difference for the environment, society, and our own operations. ESG principles are embedded within our strategic intentions, and good practice is evident across many of our services and functions.

We also recognise the need to consolidate our current good practice into a clear policy framework. This will allow us to measure impact, drive purposeful change, and set ambitious long-term goals.

This page outlines our current position and ongoing initiatives across the three ESG pillars: Environmental, Social, and Governance, along with our next steps.

Environmental

Healthcare facilities consume significant energy, water, and resources.
By adopting sustainable practices, we can reduce environmental impact and operational costs.

Our progress

We are reducing our environmental footprint by:

  • Generating renewable energy through solar panels

  • Expanding recycling and reuse across our hospice and retail operations

  • Supporting biodiversity in our gardens and grounds

  • Introducing energy efficiency measures such as LED lighting and modern building systems

Social

We value people and society, extending beyond our charitable mission to embrace happiness, health, well-being, inclusion, and empowerment.

Our progress

We put people at the heart of everything we do by:

  • Delivering free, holistic hospice services to our community

  • Supporting staff and volunteers with wellbeing programmes, training, and development opportunities

  • Championing inclusivity, diversity, equality and accessibility (IDEA) across the organisation

  • Creating meaningful volunteering opportunities and community partnerships

Governance

Strong governance underpins transparency, accountability, ethical decision-making, and stakeholder trust.

Our progress

We ensure transparency and accountability by:

  • Maintaining a skilled and experienced Trustee Board

  • Operating with clear policies, procedures, and regular audits

  • Monitoring risks and compliance to protect our services and reputation

  • Encouraging openness through initiatives like Freedom to Speak Up

Next Steps

St Michael’s is committed to building on the progress already made. Over the next phase, our priorities include:

    • Establishing a Green Team to lead and monitor environmental initiatives

    • Completing a carbon footprint assessment to guide future sustainability actions

    • Strengthening our Values & Behaviours framework, including champions across the organisation

    • Continuing to enhance staff wellbeing and development, with new health and learning opportunities

    • Expanding our use of renewable energy and exploring further solar installations

    • Developing a comprehensive ESG framework to set measurable goals and report transparently
