World famous cricket team to play match for St Michael’s

A world-famous cricket team will travel to Herefordshire next month to play in a match raising funds for St Michael’s Hospice.

The MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) will play at Brockhampton Cricket Club on Sunday 4th July against a select side made up of county-based players.

The MCC side features former Worcestershire and Somerset star Gareth Andrew, and ex-Herefordshire and Worcestershire player Matt Rawnsley.

The fundraiser is a tribute to former Brockhampton CC captain Andrew Watkins who died at St Michael’s in 2019.

‘Andrew was cared for with love, dedication and compassion, and the greatest empathy anyone could wish for,’ said Andrew’s mum, Sue.

‘The team at St Michael’s are outstanding, always going the extra mile.

‘This care is not only for the patient; it is there for the family too. And it is ongoing.’

The MCC match has been organised by Hospice supporter and Brockhampton CC Vice-President, Nick Nenadich.

‘The game will be a fitting tribute to Andrew,’ said Nick, who last year held his own ‘100 challenge’ for St Michael’s where he challenged himself to complete 100 cricket runs and 100 rugby conversions in 20 days, raising £20,000 for St Michael’s and prompting junior teams around the county to follow suit.

‘I know first-hand the great work the Hospice does – I benefit from the Hospice myself for pain management – and we hope the match will raise plenty of money for them.

‘It’s important people know that St Michael’s is a wonderful place that is about so much more than death and dying.’

As well as the cricket, there will be the opportunity for spectators to purchase traditional ‘cricket teas’, and enjoy performances from a jazz band.

Younger supporters can take part in a Kwik Cricket tournament.

Play begins at 11.30am.

Entry is £10 per car and can be booked via the St Michael’s Hospice website (www.st-michaels-hospice.org.uk) or paid on the day.

It will take place at Brockhampton’s The Parks ground (HR1 4TQ), where relevant Covid regulations will be in force.
