Volunteering at one of our Home & Living Stores is the best thing Barbara Pentecost has ever done.

Barbara is a book lover who was introduced to St Michael’s by a fellow Hospice Volunteer around three years ago.

“I cannot tell you what it means to me to be able to come in here,” she said.

“Everyone who gives up their time is so dedicated to the cause, and that gets me every time.

“Put simply, volunteering here is the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s helped me say ‘yes’ to things I might not previously have done, and it’s put me in touch with the very best of people.

“I’m extremely grateful for that, and always will be.”

Barbara volunteers twice a week at our Holmer Road Home & Living Store. Her specialism is books – a passion she has held throughout her life.

“My father taught me that education was key, and reading was a big part of that. That’s what started it all for me.

“Since then, books have got me through a lot in my life, including many dark times. So, to come here and sort through books, talk to people about books, and help St Michael’s at the same time, is just wonderful.”

The impressive array of books at Holmer Road spans genres including sport, politics, cookery and local history.

“I love being surrounded by books, but above all else, it’s the kindness of everyone here that gets me. Kindness doesn’t cost a thing.

“Not long ago, staff and volunteers were invited to the Hospice in Bartestree for lunch. It was my first visit there and it felt so special, just walking around those beautiful grounds. It meant so much.

“But I shouldn’t be surprised. Herefordshire, and its people, just blow me away. I love it here. Being part of a team is everything to me and that’s exactly what we are at Holmer Road – a great team.”

You too can join people like Barbara in any of our 17 retail stores.
