St Michael’s Hospice joins National Legacy Campaign to secure future care

Encouraging the local community to leave a lasting legacy

St Michael’s Hospice is proud to be part of This is Hospice Care, a nationwide initiative led by Hospice UK to highlight the power of legacy giving in sustaining hospice services across the UK. By joining forces with over 140 hospices, we aim to raise awareness about the vital role of hospice care and inspire people to consider leaving a gift in their Will.

Each year, St Michael’s Hospice provides expert, compassionate care to thousands of individuals with terminal illnesses, while also offering essential support to their loved ones. Legacy gifts play a pivotal role in funding this care—helping us ensure that no one faces the end of life alone. In fact, approximately 1 in 4 of our patients receive care thanks to gifts left in Wills.

“Our hospice relies on the kindness and generosity of our community to continue delivering specialist care,” said Rachel Jones, Director of Income Generation, Marketing & Communications at St Michael’s Hospice. “Leaving a gift in your Will—no matter the amount—ensures that we can be here for those who need us, today and for generations to come.”

Why legacy giving matters

Hospice care is free at the point of use, but it is not fully funded by the NHS. Across the UK, hospices require over £1.8 billion annually to operate, yet more than £1.3 billion of this must come from charitable donations. Legacy gifts contribute around 15% of the voluntary income that hospices rely on, making them a lifeline for end-of-life care services.

By including a legacy gift in your Will, you can help secure the future of hospice care—ensuring that anyone with a life-limiting illness can receive the support they need to live well for as long as possible. Additionally, leaving 10% or more of your estate to charity can reduce your inheritance tax liability, making it a tax-efficient way to give back to your community.

Make a lasting difference

Leaving a gift in your Will is easier than many people think, and St Michael’s Hospice is here to offer guidance to those considering this meaningful act of generosity. Every gift, large or small, contributes to a future where hospice care remains available to all who need it.
