St Michael’s Hospice are proud to be partnering with the Herefordshire Freemasons to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer and provide free, professional PSA Testing.

A PSA test is a blood test that will be carried out by a phlebotomist and can be done in a simple short appointment.

Did you know that 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime? While not all prostate issues are serious, knowing where you stand can help you make informed decisions about your health.

That’s why we’re offering a £12 PSA tests, a simple blood test that checks for Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), which can sometimes indicate prostate problems.

Should I get tested?

PSA testing isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and it’s not routinely offered to all men in the UK. But it might be worth considering if:

✅ You’re over 45 (or over 40 with a family history of prostate cancer)
✅ You’re of African or Caribbean descent (as prostate cancer risk is higher)
✅ You’ve noticed changes in your urination (going more often, difficulty going, or blood in your urine)

PSA tests aren’t perfect, they don’t always mean cancer is present, and sometimes they pick up cancers that don’t need treatment. That’s why it’s a good idea to chat with a healthcare professional to decide if a test is right for you.

What is a PSA Test?

A PSA test is a simple blood test that checks the level of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) in your blood. Sometimes, higher PSA levels can be a sign of prostate cancer, but they can also be caused by other, non-cancerous conditions.

Like any test, it has its pros and cons, so it’s good to know what to expect:

✅ Potential Benefits: It can help spot prostate issues early, giving you a chance to discuss next steps with a healthcare professional.

⚠️ Things to Consider: PSA tests aren’t always 100% accurate. A high PSA level doesn’t always mean cancer, and some cancers don’t raise PSA levels at all. This means it can sometimes lead to unnecessary worry, extra tests, or even treatment that might not be needed.

If you’re unsure whether a PSA test is right for you, it’s always a good idea to have a chat with your GP.

What happens on the day?

💙 Friendly healthcare professionals will be on hand to explain PSA testing and answer your questions.
💙 If you decide to have the test, it’s just a quick blood sample—no poking or prodding!
💙 We’ll also share advice on what to do next if your results suggest further checks are needed.

Select the event you wish to book
Select the time you wish to attend, a blank form will appear.
Select the tests you require, complete the form and answer the medical questions
On completion you should receive confirmation of your booking.

Appointments for testing are strictly by pre-booking only, we cannot accept requests for tests on the day without an online booking.
If you find you can no longer attend your appointment please let us know so we can free up the slot for someone else to attend.
