Patients' seed bombs are all set for Plant Fair sale
This time in a fortnight, our Plant Fair will be well underway.
Patients in our Day Services have enjoyed spending time creating seed bombs to sell at the Fair.
What is a seed bomb?
A seed bomb is a small ball made from a mixture of clay, compost, and seeds. Once dried, it can be placed directly onto soil where it will naturally break down over time. When conditions are right, usually with rain and sunlight, the clay softens, and the seeds begin to germinate and grow. Seed bombs are often used in gardening and conservation projects as a simple, low-effort way to encourage wildflowers and plants to grow in otherwise unused or difficult-to-reach areas.
Why we do activities like this with our patients
Activities such as making seed bombs are an important part of our day services programme. They are designed not only to be enjoyable, but also to support wellbeing in a holistic way.
For hospice day patients, creative and sensory activities can offer:
- A sense of purpose and achievement – completing something tangible that can be taken home or planted
- Gentle physical engagement – supporting fine motor skills and hand movement in an accessible way
- Mental stimulation and focus – encouraging concentration and creativity in a relaxed environment
- Opportunities for social connection – sharing conversation, ideas, and experiences with others in the group
- Connection with nature – fostering a sense of calm and continuity through planting and growth
Making the seed bombs is tactile and creative, allowing patients to work at their own pace and engage in a calming, purposeful activity.
Activities like this are not just about outcome or ability, but about the experience itself. They offer a meaningful way to spend time, reduce isolation, and support emotional wellbeing in a supportive and inclusive setting.
