Over £10K raised during Sue Parry football tournament

Hereford’s largest five-a-side football tournament has raised more than £10,000 for St Michael’s Hospice.

Cheering and music filled the air around Hereford Leisure Centre for the Sue Parry Football Tournament.

The annual event, which first took place 22 years ago, featured a festival theme this year with Hereford-based band the Hey Yahs headlining the evening entertainment.

On the field of play, the Junior tournaments again proved successful, with many of the age categories selling out.

In the Adult categories, the Female winners were Leafield Yellow, the Male winners were Puyol FC, and Haribo Fantastics took the Social prize.

One of the many reasons the Sue Parry tournament succeeds is because of its appeal to children and adults,” said the Hospice’s Events and Community Fundraising Manager, Matt Ashcroft.

“As well as their opponents, many of those taking part faced the added challenge of wet weather, but it didn’t dampen their enthusiasm.

“We would like to thank everyone who took part, including our bands, for helping raise such a wonderful sum for St Michael’s.”

He added his thanks to sponsors MandM Direct for their continued and crucial support of the tournament.

The Sue Parry Football Tournament launched in 2000 and has raised more than £100,000 for St Michael’s.

Sue died in 1999 after contracting cancer. She was a keen football fan, so in her memory, Sue’s family set-up the tournament to raise funds for the Bartestree-based Hospice, and to help support end-of-life provision in the Herefordshire area.

The St Michael’s Hospice Events season continues on Friday 15th July when THE women’s night out of the year takes place as Venus hits the streets of Hereford.
