Hospice Lottery winner Angela: We can never pay back the kindness St Michael's showed my mum

"It's only when you experience their care do you realise how much goodness St Michael's provides"

Each Friday, we make someone’s week by calling them to say they’ve won our £1,000 jackpot in the St Michael’s Hospice Lottery.

Reactions are varied, from shrieks of excitement to grunts of disbelief.

Often, tears are shed.

Winners tell us that it’s not just news of the cash which makes them emotional. Plenty of our supporters have an emotional link to St Michael’s having witnessed care provided to a loved one, sometimes many years previously. Playing the Lottery is their way of saying ‘Thank You’; of maintaining that special bond between themselves and a place they hold dear.

For Angela Warren, just playing each week was enough. Winning a grand was the icing on a cake she never expected to see.

“Every Friday for many years, I’ve played the St Michael’s Hospice Lottery. “Playing is not going to break the bank, but you know this money is going towards care which is second to none,” she said.

Angela’s experience of the Hospice dates back to 2015 when her mum, Vera, was cared for and died at St Michael’s.

“The care she received was just wonderful,” added Angela. “We could never pay back the kindness shown to her whilst there, but supporting St Michael’s by playing the Lottery is just a little way of saying ‘Thank You’.

“It’s only when you experience their care do you realise how much goodness St Michael’s provides.

“It was amazing to receive that call, and such a lovely surprise to be told I’d won £1,000. I’m not sure what I will spend it on, but I think most will go into savings.”
