Dying Matters Week 2025: Let’s Talk About It

We’re getting involved in Dying Matters Awareness Week (5–11 May). It’s all about encouraging open, honest conversations around the end of life.

Let’s be honest, most of us don’t really like talking about death. It can feel awkward, a bit scary, or even like something to avoid. But at St Michael’s Hospice, we know that talking about death and dying is one of the most important things we can do—for ourselves, and for the people we love.

That’s why we’re getting involved in Dying Matters Awareness Week (5–11 May). It’s all about encouraging open, honest conversations around the end of life—something we think really matters.

This year’s theme: The culture of Dying Matters

This year, the national theme is all about culture—how our backgrounds, beliefs, and communities shape the way we think about death and dying.

Some people grow up talking openly about death, others find it a really private or even taboo subject. Some cultures have big, joyful celebrations of life; others mark it in quieter, reflective ways. There’s no right or wrong—it’s just different. And the more we understand each other, the better we can support one another.

So…… What would your funeral song be?

As part of Dying Matters Week, we’re asking a simple question to help get people talking:
What would your funeral song be?

It might sound strange, but it’s a great way to start a deeper conversation. Whether your choice is heartfelt, hilarious, or somewhere in between, it tells people something about you—and it can spark some really meaningful chats.

Here are just a few we’ve heard:

  • “Dancing Queen” – ABBA
  • “My Way” – Frank Sinatra
  • “Spirit in the Sky” – Norman Greenbaum
  • “Bring Me Sunshine” – Morecambe & Wise

Whatever your pick, we’d love to know! Share your song on social media using #StMichaelsHospice and #DyingMattersWeek—or just start the conversation with friends or family around the dinner table.

Why these conversations matter

We get it, talking about death isn’t always easy. But when we avoid it, things can get even harder later on.
By talking now, we can:

  • Make sure our wishes are known
  • Take the pressure off our loved ones
  • Understand what really matters to us
  • Feel more at peace with the idea of dying

It’s not about being morbid—it’s about making space for honesty, humour, connection, and even comfort.

Need a nudge to plan ahead? We’ve got you

If thinking about your funeral song has got you reflecting a bit more, it might be a good time to make or update your Will. It’s one of the kindest things you can do for your loved ones—and it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

We offer a host of Free Wills Clinics as part of Dying Matters Week, to help you take that next step with no fuss. They have been so popular that our May sessions are fully booked! So why not join the waiting list to make sure you’re the first to know about our next set of clinics.

Let’s change the way we talk about death.

Let’s make it okay to bring it up, to laugh about it, to cry about it, and to plan for it. Because dying matters—and talking about it makes a difference.

Start with a song. Start the conversation.
We’re here for it.
