Benny Bear and the St Michael’s Hospice Memory Bears
Benny Bear – A heartfelt mascot bringing smiles and comfort in Herefordshire
At St Michael’s Hospice, every member of our team, including our much-loved mascot, Benny Bear, plays a role in caring for our community. Benny Bear is more than just a symbol; he’s a friend, a joy-bringer, and a companion for both our patients and their families.
What is Benny Bear’s role?
Benny Bear loves connecting with people of all ages, especially patients and their families. He attends events, gives cuddles and high-fives, and brings his positive energy to everyone he meets. At St Michael’s Hospice, we see firsthand the impact Benny Bear has on families, particularly children who are facing the emotional challenges that come with a loved one receiving hospice care.
One of Benny Bear’s favourite events is the annual Benny Bear Teddy Trail in Hereford every July. Every year, Benny hosts this exciting adventure where children are invited to help him find his 10 “lost” bear friends hidden around the town. The Teddy Trail is a community favourite, providing a fun-filled day for families and raising awareness of the hospice’s work.
Introducing the Memory Bears: Comfort and connection
In addition to Benny Bear’s presence, St Michael’s Hospice also offers a unique gift to children whose family members are receiving our care: Memory Bears. These precious bears are not just toys but a symbol of love, comfort, and connection. Each bear is lovingly given to a child by their family member, creating a lasting memory and comforting reminder of their loved one’s affection.
Each Memory Bear also has a unique story, thanks to the hand-knitted outfits crafted by our generous volunteers. Children are invited to choose an outfit for their Memory Bear, adding a personal touch that makes their bear truly unique. These bears are offered completely free, thanks to our community’s support and donations, as part of St Michael’s commitment to holistic, compassionate care.
