As a patient, getting pampered can significantly contribute to your well-being. At St Michael’s, our patients eagerly anticipate scheduling appointments with a hairdresser.

Our hairdressing/barber volunteers provide patients with a friendly and dignified service that will enhance their self-esteem. As a qualified hairdresser/barber, your tasks will be:
Reporting to the Senior Nurse in Charge on arrival to establish who requires the hairdressing service and their individual needs.
Adhere to the infection control policy, NHS handwashing policy (including washing hands between each patient) and seek advice from the senior nurse before undertaking hairdressing activities.
To be aware of all relevant St Michael’s Hospice Policies & Procedures.
Undertake hairdressing as the patient/carer requests within the scope of practice.
Consideration must be given to the comfort, position and safety of a patient in your care due to complex medical needs.
No chemical use such as colouring and perming to be carried out.
Proper use of the salon equipment to ensure the comfort and safety of the patient/carer.
Volunteer hairdressers must use own scissors if cutting hair.
The Hairdressing Salon must be left in a clean, tidy and hygienic condition after each patient and at the end of a shift.
Attend role specific training as required.

About you:

This volunteering opportunity would be ideal for an individual who has good knowledge of:
Dealing with people who are experiencing life-limiting illness, therefore an appropriate sensitivity towards the patient and their family/carers is a necessity, along with complete confidentiality.
Being considerate and courteous with patients, visitors, staff and other volunteers.
Hairdressing/Barbering and have the relevant experience and qualifications.

This role is subject to a Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) search at an enhanced barred level.

Volunteer must supply qualification certificates before commencing duties.
