Counselling Service

The Counselling Team offer support to patients, family members, friends and carers.
Alongside the Bereavement Services Coordinator, counselling is offered by a team of volunteer counsellors. All counsellors are part or fully qualified, and have experience working with problems within palliative care and bereavement.

All of St Michael’s counsellors are members of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and abide by their code of ethics. More information on the BACP can be found at

What is counselling?
Often people find talking through their concerns with someone not connected to the family in a safe, non-judgemental and supportive environment can help with facing difficult challenges, understanding your thoughts and feelings and help to find a meaning in life.

Counselling offers you the time and space to reflect on current situations, or how life experiences have impacted on you. The counselling process offers you the opportunity to recognise your emotional difficulties and assist you with making changes to your thinking and behaving, helping to enhance your wellbeing.

Who is counselling for?
Counselling is available to all patients and family members, carers and friends of anyone being cared for at the Hospice, who are experience emotional difficulties.

We are a confidential service but at times we may need to share information with family members or other professionals. We will always inform you before we do this.

About the sessions
Counselling usually takes place weekly with sessions lasting for one hour. There is no time limit on how many sessions you can have; this will be discussed and reviewed throughout your sessions.

Counselling sessions usually take place at St Michael’s Hospice. If it is difficult for you to get to the Hospice, please speak to us and home visits can be arranged. Sessions can also be fitted around any appointments you have at the Hospice.
