Choirmaster Denise bids fond farewell

For many years the St Michael’s Hospice Community Choir has entertained audiences - including royalty - at fundraising events throughout Herefordshire. But the 30-strong group will this month bid a fond farewell to its Choirmaster, Denise Bishop. Sue’s memory lives on as football tournament marks 20 years

In 2000, the family of Sue Parry helped set-up a six-a-side football tournament in memory of the 24-year-old sports fanatic from Hereford who died the previous year.                            Fast-forward two decades and the now-annual event is within a rasping half volley of raising £100,000 for Bartestree-based St Michael’s Hospice.                This summer’s tournament, to be held at Hereford Leisure Centre on Sunday 27th June, will include a music festival for the first time alongside the football which features categories for men, women and juniors. RUN on time for St Michael’s Hospice

This May, a Hereford garage will be taking a little time off from keeping the county's vehicles on the road, when they instead help runners take to the streets in a bid to beat their personal bests. Thanks to Darren and Beth Gibbons, St Michael's Hospice RUN Hereford event on Sunday 10th May 2020 will be supported by a team of pace runners wearing brightly coloured t-shirts emblazed with target finish times. Poverty Corner reform to raise cash for St Michael’s

Back in the 70s David Beale (pictured 3rd from the left) played the bass guitar with the chart-topping Steve Gibbons Band. Later he went on to form his own band 'Poverty Corner'. Four decades later and David has reformed the band to play a St Michael's Hospice fundraiser at Bromyard Cricket Club. With publicity and marketing help from his daughters, Claire Jellis and Alice Beale (pictured 2nd and fouth from the left) the gig raised £325 for St Michael's. Mindfulness Masterclass heading for St Michael’s

The co-founder of a global Mindfulness movement will visit Hereford this Spring to help lead a masterclass in end-of-life compassion. Vidyamala Burch, who helped establish Breathworks, will co-lead a day-long event at St Michael’s Hospice entitled Mindfulness & Compassion at the End of Life. Dean and Sabine’s Gala Dinner raises over 35k for St Michael’s

Dean Kronsbein's passion for British engineering was the inspiration behind a very special event which has helped raise £35,508 for St Michael's Hospice. As members of the Bentley Drivers Club, Dean and his wife Sabine invited fellow members from across the UK to an event at Cubberley House near Ross-on-Wye. Fifty guests also stayed on to enjoy a gala dinner, during which Dean and Sabine announced they would be donating all the income from ticket sales to St Michael's Hospice. Racing Pigeons flying high for St Michael’s

A pigeon fancier from Herefordshire has raised £1,285 for his local Hospice through the sale of 24 racing pigeons. Joe Baker organised the sale of his birds in memory of his wife Maureen who died on 29th August 2019 after being cared for by the St Michael's Hospice at Home Team. Joe, who has been keeping pigeons since 1978, sold the birds with help from British Homing World magazine which published his half-page advert free of charge. The advert brought people from Dorset, Walsall, Herefordshire, East Grinstead, Cottingham and Surrey to buy Joe's top-class specimens. Also, wellwishers from Gwent, Warrington…... Read more

Reflections on 35 years of care by Dr Richard Miller

As a medical student, I spent six months helping to care for people with advanced life-limiting conditions, such as leukaemia and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Being so involved with patients and their families left a lasting impression on me.  Subsequently, I went into general practice in Hereford and soon became aware of my limitations when caring for people at the end of their lives. I became interested in the holistic approach to end of life care provided by the hospice movement. I spent time in several hospices. Herefordshire Hospice Trail

The Herefordshire Group Trail Riders Fellowship held its third Herefordshire Hospice Trail on 14th and 15th September at the Baskerville Hall Hotel in Clyro. Entry fees and event raffle (with prizes kindly donated by local Hereford and Leominster motorcycle dealers) raised £2,500 for St Michael's Hospice, bringing the group's accumulative total to £5,336. The group, which formed in 2016, used its green lane riding expertise to lead participants across legally accessible green lanes around the Herefordshire-Wales border.
