Volunteering for St Michael’s Hospice
How much time?
Ideally, we like volunteers to be able to commit to at least four hours per week or fortnight. However, even if you are unable to make a regular commitment you could become a floating or relief volunteer covering for holidays or sick leave. Events volunteers operate on an as-and-when basis, which suits some people more.
“I needed to get out of the house so decided to volunteer. I was worried that St Michael’s would be a sad, whispering place but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It’s a lovely place with a great atmosphere – I love being pert of a team and meeting so many different people.”
Day Hospice Volunteer 6 hours per week
Confidentiality and Training
Everyone who works in and for the Hospice, whether in a paid or voluntary capacity, is bound by a professional rule of confidentiality and must not discuss patient details outside the Hospice. Volunteers are also required to have a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check because some roles involve regular contact with vulnerable adults. Training is given to all volunteers at the start of their time at St Michael’s. Mandatory training, for example fire procedures, also needs to be undertaken.
“I thought about becoming a volunteer for 12 months before I actually applied. The people are really nice and it feels so good to be giving some benefit to patients and their families. Also, it really makes me appreciate my lot in life.”

The Hospice simply could not survive without the help and support provided by the near-700 volunteers who give their time and energy so selflessly. St Michael’s volunteers take on a huge variety of roles and responsibilities, including:
