Volunteering
"My husband was treated at St Michael's and everyone was so kind to him that after he died I really wanted to put something back. When I see people arriving at reception looking sad or worried I have a real empathy with them and feel good about being able to help them." Volunteer Receptionist
We simply could not survive without the help and support given by our 600 plus volunteers. Men and women from all walks of life give their time and energy to provide essential back up help to nursing and administrative staff who care for patients and relatives.
St Michael's volunteers take on a huge variety of roles and responsibilities including:
· Administration/clerical duties
· Chaplaincy
· Fundraising
· Home making
· Driving
· Gardening
· Maintenance/Handymen
· Librarians
· Receptionists
· Shop Assistants
· Support Groups
· Social Care
· Kitchen Assistants
· Support Services
· Complementary Therapists
· Hairdressers
How much time?
Ideally we like volunteers to be able to commit to at least four hours per week or fortnight, however even if you are unable to make a regular commitment you could become a floating or relief volunteer covering for holidays or sick leave.
Confidentiality and Training
Everyone who works in and for the Hospice, whether in a paid or voluntary capacity is bound by a professional rule of confidentiality and must not discuss patient details outside the Hospice. Volunteers are also required to have a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check because some roles involve regular contact with vulnerable adults. Training is given to all volunteers at the start of their time at St Michael's. Mandatory training, for example fire procedures also needs to be undertaken.
