Laura ready for special Open Gardens weekend

Laura Matthews' beautiful Bredwardine garden open this weekend

Laura and Peter Matthews often talked about opening the garden of their Herefordshire home for the public to enjoy.

But when Peter died last February it looked as though this dream wouldn’t become a reality.

However, this weekend, Laura will honour the couple’s idea by inviting the public to explore their breathtaking garden overlooking the River Wye near Bredwardine to raise funds for the Hospice which cared for her other half.

‘I used to spend a lot of time in the garden with Peter,’ said Laura.

‘We would work well as a team. Opening our garden was something that Peter and I had talked about.

‘Unfortunately, we never got any further than talking about it.’

Peter died at St Michael’s Hospice in Bartestree.

‘When we first went into the Hospice it was like having a big hug,’ added Laura.

‘The care we received was beyond words, and it has continued since Peter died, too.’

As well as their beautifully manicured gardens, the couple also shared a love of walking, often enjoying strolls of varying distances around Herefordshire. In a touching nod towards this pastime, Peter’s walking boots are now a garden feature after Laura began planting flowers in them, ensuring his memory continues.

‘There’s lots of memories of Peter around the garden, from the decking which he put in, to the summerhouse,’ said Laura.

‘After he died, I was spending a lot of time out in the garden, and I thought it would be a good idea to open it.’

The weekend has already been previewed in Amateur Gardening magazine.

‘Having told people what I had planned, everyone was wildly enthusiastic,’ she said. ‘I’ve had lots and lots of support.’

Laura will open her garden on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July as part of the Hospice’s Open Gardens programme.

The gardens are open 11am-5pm both days. For more details, including prices, visit
