Spiritual care

Questions, questions…often illness prompts us and our families to think about hope, fear and something of the meaning of life. The changes in circumstances may bring their own disease. This may or may not be in a religious context, but in either case they may be deeply disturbing. The Head of Social & Spiritual Care, Rev David Vonberg, with his team of volunteers, are present in the Hospice to help you and your families and friends to address those questions, fears and uncertainties in a non-judgemental and safe environment. David and the team are available for any patient, visitor and member of staff that wish to see them.

The Hospice Chapel is open twenty four hours a day for everyone. It is a quiet space in which to sit and reflect, light a candle, or listen to music on headphones; additionally there is a book to write your thoughts or requests in. A number of other aids to prayer or reflection are also available for you to use.

Support and remembering

During the year the Social & Spiritual Care Team provide regular opportunities for those who have been bereaved and are facing bereavement to meet and talk. David is also available for more personal support at the Hospice if that is appropriate. In addition, at Christmas time the Hospice works with local churches and the Cathedral to organise a series of ‘Light up a Life’ services when local communities can remember loved ones.

The aim of St Michael’s Hospice is to provide physical, emotional and spiritual support to patients and their carers. The Social & Spiritual Care Team wholeheartedly supports this and does all it can to contribute towards it.
