Marathon Man Mark!
Mark Beattie set himself a challenge early in 2011: to run the Virgin London Marathon before he turned 40 years old.
As a fit and healthy man, Mark has taken part in half marathons before, as well as coaching junior football in Llantwit, but admits he does have to work at keeping fit. His family was impressed with his finishing time of 4 hours 20 minutes and 14 seconds. "I'm quite proud of him, I must say," said his grandmother, who shared his story with the Hospice.
Mark raised over £1,400 for St Michael's through this run. As well as his grandmother working in the Hospice charity shop in Hay-on-Wye as a volunteer, Mark's uncle and mother-in-law both died at St Michael's in 2010, so he had real connections to the Hospice for which he could draw strength on during the marathon.
